OLIVE BRANCHES OF HOPE
A Healing Retreat for Women After Suicide Loss
October 30-November 4, 2027 | Puglia, Italy
A Different Kind of Healing Experience
After my own losses, I discovered that travel could reach parts of me that words alone could not. Being somewhere new did not take away my grief, nor did it ask me to leave the people I loved behind. It gave me room to breathe. It gently interrupted the routines and surroundings that had become entwined with survival, awakened my senses, and reminded me that beauty, connection, curiosity, and even joy were still available to me.
That experience became part of the inspiration for Olive Branches of Hope.
This retreat is not about escaping grief or trying to fix it. It is an invitation to step outside the demands of everyday life and enter a compassionate, thoughtfully supported experience where love and loss are honored - and where you can begin reconnecting with the life that is still yours.
Why New Surroundings Can Support Healing
Grief and trauma can keep the nervous system on high alert, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, shut down, disconnected, or caught in familiar loops of thought and emotion. New, safe experiences invite the brain to pay attention differently. Novel surroundings engage the senses, create opportunities for new neural pathways, and help the mind form memories that are not centered only on loss.
When those new experiences are paired with safety, supportive relationships, gentle movement, rest, creativity, and practical nervous-system tools, they can help the body soften out of survival mode. This is not a promise that travel alone heals grief. It is an intentional way of creating the conditions in which regulation, connection, meaning, and hope can begin to grow.
The Journey Begins Before Italy
We will not wait until we land in Puglia to begin.
Before the retreat, we will gather for virtual sessions. These gatherings will allow you to meet the women traveling beside you, begin sharing your story at your own pace, and learn post-traumatic growth and nervous-system regulation practices before you leave home.
By the time we arrive in Italy, we will already have begun creating trust, connection, and a shared language for healing. Rather than spending the retreat only talking about what happened, we will be able to put these tools into practice as we experience Puglia together - during healing circles, excursions, creative workshops, movement, shared meals, quiet reflection, and moments of genuine joy.
Why Olive Branches of Hope - and Why Now?
You have carried so much for so long.
You may have learned how to keep going - to work, care for others, meet your responsibilities, and appear "fine." But surviving is not the same as feeling fully alive.
Perhaps part of you longs to experience beauty, laughter, connection, and adventure again. Yet another part wonders whether allowing joy into your life means you are moving away from the person you lost.
It doesn't.
Your love is not measured by how much pain you continue to carry. You can deeply miss your loved one while also making room for experiences that feel meaningful, hopeful, and alive.
Olive Branches of Hope offers a compassionate place to begin.
This Retreat May Be for You If...
You are tired of explaining a loss that others do not fully understand.
You feel emotionally exhausted from trying to hold everything together.
You want to connect with women who understand the complexity of suicide loss.
You are carrying guilt, anger, unanswered questions, or things left unsaid.
You miss the woman you were before your loss - or are still discovering who you are now.
You want to experience joy again without feeling guilty.
You are ready to reconnect with life, even if you are unsure what that looks like.
You want more than a traditional grief group or another conversation in a conference room.
You feel drawn to healing through travel, beauty, culture, creativity, movement, and meaningful connection.
Why Puglia?
Puglia is more than a beautiful backdrop. Its ancient olive trees, open countryside, traditional villages, nourishing food, sea air, and slower rhythm of life invite you to become present to what is around you - and to what is awakening within you.
Here, healing will not be separated from living. It may happen while shaping clay with your hands, making pasta with local nonnas, learning the joyful rhythms of pizzica, wandering through historic towns, sharing a meal beneath the open sky, laughing with new friends, or simply allowing beauty to reach you again.
Together, we will honor the love you carry while gently exploring what it means to continue living.
This is not about "getting over" your loved one. It is not about leaving your grief behind.
It is about discovering that grief does not have to be the only part of your story.
What You May Carry Home
A deeper understanding of your grief and the ways it has changed you.
Practical tools for calming your nervous system and navigating difficult moments.
Greater permission to experience joy without guilt.
Meaningful connections with women who truly understand suicide loss.
A renewed relationship with yourself and the life that remains.
A personal keepsake created during your retreat.
Memories that remind you love, grief, beauty, and joy can exist together.
Hope - not as pressure to "move on," but as a gentle willingness to keep moving forward.
You Do Not Have to Be Finished Grieving to Come
You do not need to arrive feeling strong, hopeful, or certain. You do not need to know exactly what you need.
You only need to feel a quiet readiness for something more: more connection, more support, more beauty, more meaning - or perhaps simply one small step toward feeling alive again.
Come as you are, with your grief, your questions, your memories, and your love.
Your loved one will always be part of your story. Attending Olive Branches of Hope is an opportunity to begin writing what comes next.
You are still here.
Your life still matters.
And there is still beauty waiting for you.
MASSERIA SPECULA
EST. 1611 IN PUGLIA, ITALY
FAMILY-OWNED RETREAT VENUE BY THE SEA
Where We’re Staying
Masseria Specula: A boutique, family-owned wellness retreat in the heart of Puglia
Surrounded by 20 hectares of private countryside and just a 15-minute walk from the shimmering Ionian Sea, this beautifully restored historic farmhouse offers an idyllic setting for Olive Branches of Hope.
Here, mornings unfold slowly, meals can be shared beneath the open sky, and the beauty of southern Italy invites you to breathe more deeply and reconnect with yourself. Every corner of the masseria has been thoughtfully designed to inspire rest, creativity, connection, and renewal.
This is more than a beautiful place to stay—it is a place to truly settle in. Together, we’ll experience the rhythms, flavors, traditions, and natural beauty of Puglia while creating space for healing, hope, joy, and meaningful connection.
Getting to Puglia
Brindisi Airport is the most convenient option, located approximately one hour from the retreat venue. Guests traveling from the United States typically fly into Rome or Milan and take a connecting flight to Brindisi.
Bari Airport is another option; however, it is approximately two hours from the venue.
Airport Transfers
Round-trip group transportation between Brindisi Airport and the retreat venue is included during designated arrival and departure windows. Transportation from Bari Airport, private transfers, and transfers outside the designated times may be arranged at the guest’s expense.
Experiences Included in Your Retreat
Healing, culture, connection—and the invitation to feel fully alive again.
This is not a retreat where you will spend every day sitting in a room talking about grief. In Puglia, healing also happens around the table, through creativity and movement, beside the sea, and in the moments when you surprise yourself by laughing again. Each included experience has been chosen to help you honor the love you carry while gently reconnecting with life, beauty, community, and hope.
Taste the Traditions of Puglia
Organic Olive Oil Tasting
Awaken your senses during a guided tasting of three organic extra virgin olive oils produced in this remarkable region. You’ll learn the story and character of each oil, discover how to recognize its aromas and flavors, and finish with a seasonal local aperitif. It is a simple, beautiful invitation to slow down, savor the moment, and experience Puglia through one of its most treasured traditions.
Traditional Pasta-Making with Local Nonnas
Gather around the table with local Nonnas and learn to make orecchiette, Puglia’s signature ear-shaped pasta, by hand. Afterward, we’ll share a multi-course meal featuring the pasta we created together. More than a cooking class, this is an experience of warmth, laughter, heritage, and connection—the kind of memory made when hands and hearts are busy together.
Create, Move, and Celebrate
Pizzica Dance with Live Salento Music
Let the rhythm draw you back into your body during an interactive pizzica experience accompanied by live traditional Salento musicians. We’ll explore the history and healing roots of this spirited folk dance, then allow movement, music, and shared joy to do what words sometimes cannot. No dance experience is needed—only a willingness to move, smile, and feel alive.
Your Handcrafted Retreat Keepsake
During a guided pottery workshop, you’ll shape and decorate your own ceramic piece using the traditional pinch-pot technique. Your creation can become a personal vessel of hope—a symbol of the love you carry, what you are ready to receive, and the life you are continuing to build. You’ll take it home as a meaningful reminder of Puglia and the women who shared this journey with you.
Rest in Nature
Sea-View Open-Air Tub
Sink into stillness in a beautifully restored stone livestock basin, now an open-air soaking tub overlooking the sea. With ambient or heated water and space for up to six women at a time, this intimate experience offers a peaceful pause to breathe, rest your body, and take in the quiet beauty of the Puglian landscape.
Coastal Hike to the Flamingo Salt Lake
Step directly from Masseria Specula onto a self-guided coastal path leading to a natural salt lake where wild flamingos gather. The walk is approximately 60 minutes each way, offering space for conversation, contemplation, sea air, and the restorative rhythm of placing one foot in front of the other. Participation is always optional, and you are welcome to choose rest instead.
Explore the Beauty of Puglia
Two included half-day excursions allow us to experience Puglia beyond the masseria—because travel, discovery, beauty, and shared adventure can also be part of healing.
Lecce: The Florence of the South
Step into the beauty and energy of Lecce, a captivating Baroque city known for its ornate golden-stone architecture, historic churches, artisan traditions, and vibrant streets. We’ll have time to explore, learn, wander, and enjoy the culture of one of southern Italy’s most celebrated cities.
Ostuni: The White City
Wander through Ostuni’s maze of whitewashed lanes, stone archways, intimate courtyards, artisan shops, and breathtaking views toward the Adriatic Sea. With its luminous beauty and slower rhythm, Ostuni offers the perfect setting for curiosity, reflection, connection, and the simple pleasure of being somewhere extraordinary.
Healing Circles and Workshops with Jayne
Throughout the retreat, Jayne Madigan will guide compassionate healing circles, nervous-system practices, and experiential workshops created specifically for women after suicide loss. These gatherings will offer a safe, understanding space to speak honestly, feel less alone, and explore ways to carry your grief without allowing it to consume every part of your life.
Using gentle practices drawn from neuropsychotherapy, somatic healing, EFT, energy medicine, mindfulness, and nervous-system regulation, Jayne will help you create room for what is present—grief, love, anger, longing, relief, hope, or even joy—without judgment or pressure to be anywhere other than where you are.
The work is not about “moving on,” fixing your grief, or leaving your loved one behind. It is about honoring your continuing bond, reconnecting with yourself, and discovering how love and life can continue side by side.
A Retreat Designed for Both Depth and Delight
There will be meaningful healing work—and there will also be delicious meals, music, creativity, exploration, laughter, rest, and spacious moments with women who understand. Nothing is designed to rush you, force you, or keep you emotionally “on” all day. You will be invited to participate in a way that honors your own body, energy, and needs.
You are not coming to Italy to escape your grief.
You are coming to remember that your life still holds beauty, possibility, connection—and hope.
Meals Made With Love By Our Nonna’s
One of the most special parts of your retreat will be gathering around the table for meals lovingly prepared by local Nonnas—Puglian grandmothers who have spent a lifetime cooking for their families.
Their expertise comes not from culinary school, but from generations of tradition. Using treasured recipes and time-honored techniques passed down from their mothers and grandmothers, our Nonnas will prepare authentic dishes that bring the flavors and soul of Puglia to every meal.
More than a dining experience, each meal is an invitation to slow down, gather together, and experience the warmth of a true Puglian kitchen. We are honored to share not only the Nonnas’ delicious cooking, but also their stories, generous hospitality, and the love they bring to every dish.
